Sakata, O'Rourke and everyone else, tomorrow Jan. 23, at SuperDeluxe in Tokyo. If there is video, we will post it.
Born in 1969, composer/improviser/producer Jim O'Rourke has recorded as a member of the experimental rock groups Gastr Del Sol, The Red Krayola, Brise Glace and Yona Kit, recorded a number of his own albums of pop rock, guitar improvisation and musique-concrète compositions on the Drag City, Staalplaat, Extreme, Divided, Entenpfuhl and Metamkine labels, released collaborative recordings with Loren Connors, Henry Kaiser, K.K. Null, Gunter Muller, Eddie Prevost, Evan Parker, Phill Niblock and Mats Gustafsson, and produced albums by Tony Conrad, Faust, Melt Banana and Space Streakings. O'Rourke was most active as a producer and member of Sonic Youth during the '00s, but he left the band in late 2005. (discogs.com)
In 2005 he began peforming with saxophonist Akira Sakata in Japan. That lead to an ongoing quartet with drummer Chris Corsano and acoustic bassist Darin Gray (aka Chikamorachi). O'Rrourke then produced Sakata's Friendly Pants, the first American release by Sakata in more than 20 years. He has continued to perform with the quartet in Japan.
